Two children, Tabia Akhter and Jamila Akhter, drowned at a separate place in Netrokona. The incident took place in Durgapur and Kalmakanda upazilas of the district from noon to evening on Friday (April 15)
Child Tabia Akhter is one and a half years old. She is the daughter of Shamsul Haque of Shyamnagar village in Durgapur upazila and the child Jamila Akhter is one year old. She is the daughter of Jahangir Miah of Chaita village in Rangchati union of Kalmakanda upazila.
Durgapur Police Officer-in-Charge (OC-Investigation) Mir Mahbubur Rahman and Kalmakanda Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Ahad Khan confirmed the information.
Meanwhile, police and local sources said that the child Tabia was playing with other children in the backyard. At one stage it fell into the water of the pond next to the yard. When the family members could not find him and started searching for him, they rescued him from the pond and took him to the Upazila Health Complex.
The on-duty doctor declared him dead. Uncle Maryam was playing with the baby Jamila in front of the house by tying a rope on a mango tree. Leaving the baby Jamila under a tree by the side of the pond, when Maryam left, Jamila fell into the pond next to the house.
After a while, when the people of the house started searching without seeing Jamila, at one stage they saw the child floating in the pond. Jamila was later rescued with the help of locals and taken to Kalmakanda Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.
