The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement late on Thursday that Moscow had drowned in stormy seas while being towed to the port.

The missile cruiser Moscow of 510 sailors is considered a symbol of the strength of the Russian military. The warship was leading the Russian navy to attack Ukraine. The speed of the 18.4 meter long warship is 32 nautical miles per hour or 59 kilometers.

Kiev claims that the missiles fired by them hit the warship. However, Moscow did not report any attack. They say the warship sank after the fire.

Russia says the fire caused the ship’s munitions to explode. All sailors have been evacuated to nearby Russian ships in the Black Sea. Other details were not disclosed.

Initially, it was reported that the warship was floating. Later in the day, Russian media reported that Moscow was sinking.

The state news agency Tass reported, citing the Russian Defense Ministry, that the main structure of the ship was damaged when a fire broke out after the ammunition exploded. It loses its balance when pulled towards the port. The ship sank because of the rough seas.

However, Ukrainian military officials said they had attacked Moscow with Neptune missiles made in the country. The weapons were created after Russia occupied Crimea in 2014 and Ukraine’s naval threat in the Black Sea increased.
Russian news agencies say Moscow was commissioned in 1973. The warship is equipped with 16 Bhulkan cruise missiles capable of striking at a distance of 800 km. It also has submarine-destroying and mine-torpedo weapons.

If the Ukrainian attack is confirmed, the 12,490-ton Moscow will be the largest warship to be sunk by enemy attacks since World War II. Russia also deployed missile cruisers during the war in Syria.

Moscow is the second major Russian warship to be attacked since the February 24 attack on Ukraine. Last month, Ukraine demanded the destruction of the Russian landing support ship Saratov.
