Raja Parvez Ashraf is the new Speaker of Pakistan

The new government led by Shahbaz Sharif has taken control of the lower house of Pakistan’s parliament with the election of a new speaker.


Imran Khan was forced to step down as prime minister after losing a no-confidence vote last week. Both the former Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of Parliament were allies of Imran and they did their best to thwart the no-confidence motion against Imran. Stuck vote.

The new speaker of parliament was elected on Saturday.

The new speaker is Raja Pervez Ashraf, leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and former prime minister of the country.

According to the BBC, Raja Parvez was unanimously elected Speaker in the absence of Imran’s party. His party did worse than expected from opinion polls, which saw them at gaining about a third of the seats.

Raja Pervez Ashraf has been sworn in as the 22nd Speaker of Pakistan, the National Assembly said in a statement on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Imran’s party MPs have resigned, but the process is not over yet. If their resignations are accepted, they will have to go to the polls in about 100 seats in the next two months. Which could be a big challenge for the Shahbaz government.

The new prime minister Shahbaz has not yet announced his cabinet. However, the announcement is expected to come soon.

The biggest challenge now facing the Shahbaz government is to restructure the ailing economy.
