Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement that it had summoned Marcus Eder, the EU’s chief envoy to Moscow, to protest the move.

Moscow finally responded on Friday. A statement from the Foreign Ministry said, “The EU’s bilateral cooperation with Russia over the past few decades is being destroyed and the EU is fully responsible for it.”

A statement from the Foreign Ministry stated that the diplomat had been ordered to leave Moscow as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, the EU embassy in Moscow has expressed regret over the move by the Russian Foreign Ministry. In a statement on Friday, the embassy described the ministry’s move as “vindictive” and “baseless.”

“We want to say that the Russian government’s allegations are baseless and that the move to expel the diplomats is retaliatory,” the EU embassy said in a statement posted on social media.

“We would also like to say that if Russia continues to take such decisions and actions, then the country will become internationally isolated.
