Rear Admiral M Shahjahan, chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority, said the port of Matarbari deep sea port would have the highest draft than the ports around Bangladesh.
He expressed such hope while exchanging views with journalists on Sunday afternoon on the eve of Chittagong Port Day. Port Day is celebrated on 25th April every year.
“We are now dependent on the ports of Colombo, Port Kelang and Singapore,” he said. If Matarbari is a port then you don’t have to depend on others. ”
The government wants to build an ongoing power plant at Matarbari in Maheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar, as well as upgrade it as a port due to its location. For this, the cost of the previous project has been increased to Tk 52,000 crore.The Chittagong Port Authority (CHBC) is in charge of the construction of the port. Matarbari deep seaport will be operated under the country’s main seaport authority, port officials said.
During the exchange of views on Sunday, Chubak chairman Shahjahan said the capacity of Chittagong port would increase three to four times once the construction of Bay Terminal and Matarbari deep seaport is completed.
“Once the construction work is completed, Matarbari will be a sub-regional hub.”
He said that after the completion of these two projects under implementation at Chittagong Port, large ships will be able to dock at the jetty with ease.
“Ships of 18 meters draft and 300 meters length will be able to enter the deep seaport of Matarbari. These ships will carry 10 to 12 thousand TEUS containers. At present, ships of 9.5 meters draft and 190 meters length can enter Chittagong port. ”
Claiming that significant progress has been made in the two projects so far, Rear Admiral Shahjahan said, “263 acres of land has been handed over to the port authorities by the Cox’s Bazar district administration for the Matarbari port development project. He also said that the occupation of 6 acres of privately owned land in the project for the Bay Terminal has been explained.
During the exchange of views, the Chairman briefed on the recent activities of the port. In 2021, the country’s main seaport handled 32 lakh 14 thousand TEUS containers, he said, “The sector has grown 13.19 percent. General cargo has been lifted 1 crore 8 lakh tons. 4,209 ships have arrived. ”
Port Member (Finance) Kamrul Amin, Member (Harbor Marine) Commodore Mostafizur Rahman, Member (Engineering) Captain Mahbubur Rahman were present.
Director (Transport) Enamul Karim presented a report on the progress of the port.
