Mariupol fell

While 53 days have passed in Russia’s invasion attempt against Ukraine, it was claimed that the Russian army took control of the strategic city of Mariupol on the Sea of Azov. In the statement made by the Russian Ministry of Defense, it was noted that the city center is completely under the control of the army and the resistance continues only in Azovstal, one of the largest iron and steel facilities in Europe. Ukrainian President Vlodomir Zelenski indirectly confirmed Russia’s claim with his statement stating that the resistance continues in a small part of the port. Russia captured an important city for the first time in its military operation targeting Ukraine on February 24.

Noting that the settlements were completely seized, the Russian Ministry of Defense called on the Ukrainian soldiers at the Azovstal facilities to surrender. In the call, it was stated that the Ukrainian soldiers would not be harmed if they surrendered, otherwise they would be destroyed. While the deadline given until noon yesterday was over, the Ukrainian authorities stated that the resistance continued in certain parts of the city.

Although this statement made by Russia has not been confirmed yet, the words of the Ukrainian leader Zelensky revealed the gravity of the situation in the city. Making statements about the situation in Mariupol, Zelenski emphasized that the Ukrainian forces are still defending Mariupol, but that the Ukrainian troops control only a small part of the port city. This statement of the President of Ukraine was interpreted as an “indirect confirmation”.

The entire superstructure and infrastructure of Mariupol, which has been under Russian attack for more than a month, has been destroyed. Ukrainian authorities reported that thousands of civilians lost their lives, and there were corpses on the streets. Mariupol was the headquarters of the Ukrainian Azov battalion,

Mariupol, the port city in the southeast of Ukraine, was the most heavily bombed and damaged city in Russia. Mariupol is very important for Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine. If Mariupol is captured, Russia will have gained full control of more than 80 percent of Ukraine’s Black Sea coastline, cutting off Ukraine’s maritime trade and further isolating it from the world. On the other hand, with the control of Mariupol, Russian military units in the region will have the opportunity to advance to the Ukrainian lines in the Donbas region in the north.

In a statement made by the Ministry of Defense of Russia, it was announced that the request of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for the release of the hostages in the Turkish mosque in Mariupol was fulfilled by the Russian special forces, and the hostages in the mosque were rescued. Ministry Spokesperson Igor Konashenkov noted that President Erdogan’s request was fulfilled yesterday (April 16) and the people inside the mosque were transferred to a safe area. The spokesperson did not comment on the number of people rescued.
