Huji chief Shafiqur arrested after 21 years

Huji-B, created in direct collaboration with the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI, was much more professional and formidable than the JMB or Ansarullah Bangla team.

He enlisted in the Taliban while studying at the Yusuf bin Nuri Madrasa in Karachi. That was in 1967. After that he went to Afghanistan with weapons and explosives training to fight. Returning to his homeland at the end of 1979, he returned with another Afghan militant, Mufti Hannan, and formed a new militant organization: Harkatul Jihad Bangladesh. The militant group bombed a New Year’s Eve party at Ramna’s Batmul in Dhaka, killing 10 people. His name came up as the main coordinator of the 2001 attack – Shafiqur Rahman. Shafiqur was one of the seven people sentenced to death by the court in the 2014 case, including Mufti Hannan. After hiding for 21 years, the militant leader Shafiqur Rahman was arrested by the Special Forces of Bangladesh Police (RAB) in a raid in a village of Kishoreganj on Thursday night.

Huji-B, created in direct collaboration with the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI, was much more professional and formidable than the JMB or Ansarullah Bangla team. From taking Shafiqur, a student of Deoband Madrasa in India, to Karachi, to enlisting in the Taliban, The Pakistani spy agency ISI was behind sending Huji-B to fight in Afghanistan and bringing him back to Bangladesh. At one time Shafiqur was the supreme leader or emir of Huji. Shafiqur was also one of the main culprits in the August 21, 2004 bombing of the Leader of the Opposition Sheikh Hasina’s rally and the 2005 grenade attack on former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria. Huji-B had close ties with the BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami coalition government led by Khaleda Zia. Many HuJI leaders, including Mufti Hannan, were captured by police after a coup d’tat in Bangladesh. After that the Sheikh Hasina government came and practically evicted Huji-B from Bangladesh. Although Mufti Hannan was hanged, Shafiqur seemed to disappear into thin air. The police think, He somehow escaped to Pakistan. After receiving information from undercover sources, the RAB team raided Shafiqur’s house in Bhairab, Kishoreganj and arrested him. He had been working as an imam in a mosque in Narsingdi for 14 years. The salary was 5 thousand rupees. His goal was to reorganize Huji-B. For this, Shafiqur fell into the trap of the detectives just to start communicating with the youth.

As much as the police breathed a sigh of relief at his arrest, so did their confidence. Because for 21 years, a top militant who has been sentenced to death has remained in the country with dust in their eyes.
