It has been narrated in the Holy Qur’an, ‘(The Qur’an) has been revealed in clear Arabic language. It must be mentioned in previous books. (Surah Ash-Shu’ara, verses: 195-196)
Elsewhere it is said, ‘It is I who have revealed the Qur’an in Arabic, that you may understand. (Surah Yusuf, Ayat: 2)
It is clear from the above two verses that the meaning of the Qur’an must be understood in the light of the Arabic language.
The true meaning of the Qur’an cannot be understood by following the external meaning alone. If we do not understand the meaning of the Qur’an according to the Arabic language, then there will be disagreement in the Muslim community and the Muslim Ummah will be confused due to misinterpretation. Allama Ibn Jarir Tabari (Rah.) Said, ‘The meaning of the Book of Allah revealed to Muhammad (peace be upon him) must be suitable for the language of the Arabs. Because the language of the Qur’an has been made useful to them. Their language has been given superiority over all other languages. (Tafsir Tabari: 1/12)
Imam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: ‘The language through which (the Qur’an) is addressed is the most complete of the languages and the most obvious in expression. Through this Allah has been gracious to man. As Irshad said, ‘I am the one who revealed the Qur’an in Arabic, so that you may understand. (Surah Yusuf, Ayat: 2;
Predecessor scholars have warned people specifically about the interpretation of the Qur’an. Imam Ahmad (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Most people make mistakes in ‘tabil’ (interpretation) and ‘qiyas’ (reasoning or conjecture).” They misinterpret the Qur’an and Sunnah, and err on the side of reasoning. (Majmoo ‘al-Fataawa: 3/73)
