Difference between Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Jawaharlal Nehru

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Jawaharlal Nehru

“The truth is, there was a difference in attitude between Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Jawaharlal Nehru and myself. This was affecting local administration, and it was clear that officers were split into two groups.

The larger group look up at Sardar Patel, and they act in a manner that pleased him. Jawaharlal was looking at me and the smaller group tried to follow Jawaharlal’s orders.

Khursheed Ahmed, a Muslim officer and son of Saheb Zada Ashamed, was the Chief Commissioner of Delhi. He wasn’t a very strong officer. It  afraid of being view as favoring Muslims if he took strong actions. In fact only the nominal head and the administrative action was taken by Deputy Commissioner Randhawa on his own initiative.

“Sardar Patel was Home Minister, and the Delhi administration was directly below him.

Gandhiji called Patel to ask him what he was doing in order to end the carnage. Sardar Patel tried to reassure Gandhiji by saying that the reports Gandhiji had receive were exaggerated. He even said that Muslims did not have any reason to be afraid or complain.

Jawaharlal stated with deep sorrow that he couldn’t tolerate the Delhi situation where Muslim citizens were being slaughtered like dogs and cats. He felt shame that he could not save them and was powerless to do so. He could not rest because he could not give an answer to people who complainer about the terrible events.

“We were shock by Sardar Patel’s response. He calmly explain to Gandhiji that Jawaharlal was completely unintelligible at a time in which Muslims were being kill in Delhi. While there may have been some isolate incidents, the government was doing all it could to protect the property and lives of Muslims. He express dissatisfaction with Jawaharlal, the Prime Minister, for not expressing disapproval at what this government was doing. Jawaharlal was unable to speak for a while and finally turn to Gandhiji, in despair. He state that, if these were Sardar Patel’s views he would not have any comment.

After the conversation, Gandhi decide to continue fast.

“Gandhiji state that he had seen Muslims in Delhi being kill before his eyes. This was happening while his own Vallabhbhai, the Home Minister for Government in India, was responsible for maintaining law & order in the capital. Patel has not only fail in his duty to protect Muslims, but has also dismiss any complaints on this matter. Gandhiji state that he was force to use his last weapon: fasting until the situation changes. He began his fast on January 12, 1948. Fast was in a way direct against Sardar Patel’s attitude and Patel was aware of this.

“We tried our best to discourage Gandhiji’s fast. Jawaharlal Sardar Patel and me sat by Gandhiji’s sides on the first day of his fast. Sardar Patel was heading for Bombay on the morning of the second day. He spoke in a formal tone to Gandhiji and complain that Gandhiji was not fasting for any reason. He also claimed that there was no reason for the fast. Sardar Patel would be charge with violating his fast. He stated with bitterness that Gandhiji was acting like Sardar Patel was responsible for the Murders of the Muslims.

“Gandhiji responded in his calm, steady voice, “I’m not in China right now, but in Delhi.” I have not lost my eyes or ears. You can’t convince me if you try to convince me to believe the testimony of my eyes and ears.

“Sardar Patel was irritate by Gandhiji’s reply and spoke harshly about him. Jawaharlal, Jawaharlal, and I were both shock and shock by his behavior and couldn’t stop talking. I protested, saying, “Vallabhbhai!

When ask to cancel his Bombay trip, he reply:

“Patel Almost shouted back: “What’s the point of my staying?” Gandhiji won’t listen to me. He seems determined to ruin the reputation of Hindus for the rest of the world. I don’t know what to make of him if this is his attitude. I cannot change my program, and I must travel to Bombay.”

It was quite eye-opening for me. I realized that Congress hardliners have been a problem from the beginning. This is likely where the culture of bias policing, prejudiced law enforcement and legacy of policing arose. This is also why some major communal riots occurred during Congress’ tenure. In the last several decades, the lines between police and rioters blurred.
