Dhaka College hall closed, students do not agree

The hall of Dhaka College in the capital has been declared closed. Students have been instructed to leave the hall by 5 pm on Tuesday. The hall will remain closed till May 5. This instruction has been given in a circular signed by the acting principal of the college Professor ATM Moinul Hossain at noon.

The decision was taken amid ongoing clashes between shop owners, workers and students of Dhaka College in New Market area. However, the students do not accept this decision. They are protesting on campus.

The clashes, which began at midnight on Monday, are still ongoing. Attacks are being made intermittently. Sometimes businessmen are attacking, sometimes students. Hundreds have been reported injured in the clashes so far.

At least 40 of the injured have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Hospital. Besides, many have been admitted to Popular, Public Health and Square Hospital in Dhanmondi. The condition of a person admitted to Square Hospital is also known to be serious.

In this incident in New Market, the situation is tense from Dhanmondi-2 to Nilkhet. The shops are all closed. There is no traffic at all. Attacks are being made intermittently. The traders have taken position towards New Market. One part of Dhaka College students is on the roof of the college, another part is in front of Chandrima Market.

A large number of police personnel have been deployed at the spot. They are using tear gas and water cannons to stop the conflict.

A fire was seen burning tires in front of Newmarket. Tires as well as shop items on the sidewalk are on fire. Firefighters are trying to put out the blaze.
