Clashes have erupted in Cox’s Bazar’s Maheshkhali over the use of harsh words by leaders and activists at a ward Awami League conference and council. Ward Awami League presidential candidate and two others were shot dead.
The incident took place at Suturia Bazar of Upazila Dhalghata Union around 5:30 pm on Sunday. The deceased have been identified as Mohammad Forkan, 48, and Abul Qasim, 32.

Local Union Parishad (UP) chairman Kamrul Hasan confirmed the incident, saying there was a conference in wards 4 and 5 of the union on Sunday. During the speeches of the two sides in that conference, there was a quarrel. At one stage, Awami League leader and former chairman Ahsan Ullah Bachchu insulted various leaders and activists. At that time, grassroots leaders and activists protested against his statement. This caused a commotion. At one point, Bachchu’s followers opened fire with a CNG weapon. The two were seriously injured.
The UP chairman further said that the injured were rescued from the spot and sent to Maheshkhali Health Complex after first aid. The matter has been informed to the district, upazila and administration.
Kamrul Hasan also said that the vice president of the upazila Awami League. Nurul Alam and Joint Secretary Braj Gopal were present. Bachchu’s men fired in front of them.
Accused Ahsan Ullah Bachchu has admitted the incident. However, he said his men did not fire. In this regard, he said, trying to stop me by spreading rumors and fake news.
Maheshkhali police sub-inspector (SI) Abu Bakkar said the victims were being brought to the hospital. They have been asked to lodge a complaint at the police station. Action will be taken on the complaint later.
