Awami League leader’s son Zafar Sadeq Joy has been arrested in Sylhet along with 100 mobile sets smuggled from India. Along with him, police arrested two others named Akhter Hossain and Limon Mia. Joy is the son of Liaquat Ali, general secretary of Jaintapur Upazila Awami League in Sylhet.

According to police sources, they were arrested from the gate of Peer Bazar Shah Sundar Mazar in Sylhet Sadar Upazila around 9:30 pm on Thursday.

Later today, Friday (April 15), they were sent to jail through the court.


Earlier, Shahparan police sub-inspector (SI) Uttam Roy Chowdhury filed a case against Joy and four others. Three people have been arrested in the case and one has been shown as a fugitive.

In the statement of case, SI Uttam Roy Chowdhury mentioned that a check post was set up in Pir Bazar area of ​​Sylhet-Tamabil road on Thursday night on the basis of secret information. At that time a private car (Dhaka-Metro-G-21-0650) was instructed to stop and the car disobeyed and tried to flee. Limon was driving the private car.

At that time, the car was stuck and searched and 100 mobile phones of different brands including Indian Vivo, Samsung, Real Me, Redmi, Poko were found wrapped in cartoons. Its market value is estimated at 12 lakh 51 thousand rupees. At that time, the police confiscated the mobile sets as they could not show any valid documents.

The statement of case further said that during the interrogation of the accused, they said that these mobile sets were brought from India illegally. Md. Karimullah Market of Sylhet city. He was taking them to a trader named Shiplu. Shiplu has also been accused along with three others arrested in the case. His private car along with his mobile handset was also shown in the statement as confiscated.

The statement also said that Awami League leader Liaquat Ali had helped his son Joy in smuggling.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Syed Anisur Rahman confirmed the arrest. He said, “Initial interrogation revealed that the arrested persons had brought mobile phones from India and were doing business in Sylhet. ‘
